Today I installed Windows 8 in VirtualBox and the first application I got running on the preview version is MediaCoder. The result is MediaCoder can run almost flawlessly on Windows 8. When Windows upgraded from Windows XP to Vista, MediaCoder got some problem with the new UAC. But this time, the shift is smooth for Win32 applications like MediaCoder.

MediaCoder iPhone Edition has updated to add iPhone 4S preset which brings better quality or compression comparing with iPhone 4 preset. Several other improvements are included.

One of the significant improvements in MediaCoder 2011 RC is that Intel Media SDK Encoder is first time added to MediaCoder as an alternative accelerated H.264 encoder in addition to previous nVidia CUDA encoder. Intel’s encoder is hardware accelerated on Intel G45 and later platforms. It encodes H.264 as well as MPEG-2 off-loaded to GPU.  Benchmarks are welcomed for encoding with Intel’s encoder working in MediaCoder. For more changes, please refer to the changelog.

MediaCoder Dropbox is a simplistic user interface of MediaCoder which can be used to convert media files for a specific purpose so easily and conveniently. The appearance and transcoding parameters of a MediaCoder dropbox are defined by an XML file which can be on local disk, on remote server or embedded in any web pages. With this mechansim, users can create, publish and share their specific transcoder. Using MediaCoder dropbox is even easier. Simply load a dropbox whether local or remote, and drop media files into it and you can start transcoding.

Recently x264 has added 10-bit depth encoding and MediaCoder is keeping up with this new feature. In latest build 4777, new options of x264 have been added, including the High10 profile and 10-bit encoding. With 10-bit depth, video quality can be better at the same bitrate than encoding with common 8-bit depth. However, not all players/decoders support 10-bit depth. As far as I know, VLC can handle 10-bit depth.

Besides, MediaCoder is able to feed frames to encoders in color space of I422, YUY2 and RGB as well as common I420/YV12.最新版本的MediaCoder增加了10位色深的H.264编码，相比8传统的8位色深编码，10位色深编码可以在相同码率下带来更好的画质，不过目前只有少数几种播放器支持，VLC是其中之一。

MediaCoder 0.7.5.4740 was just released. In this version, there is a new feature which is called automatic resolution adjustment which is useful for retaining aspect ratio without applying cropping or expanding. In addition, the preview picture now has correct aspect ratio. Check out the changelog for more details.

Some H.264 stream in MKV container is already iPhone or iPad playable. In such case, we only need to convert the audio format and remux the video stream with converted audio stream into MP4 container in order to let iPhone or iPad play it. This can save us significant amount of time for transcoding.

现在很多网上下载的MKV文件的视频流已经是可以直接被iPhone或者iPad解码的，在这种情况下要把文件转换为iPhone或者iPad可以播放的MP4文件就没有必要转换视频部分，只要将音频部分转码，然后和原始的视频流混合成iPhone/iPad支持的MP4格式即可。
